Place Granada on a water map before placing yourself on a street map. The Aynadamar acequia does not begin in the Albayzín, and it was never simply a picturesque rill descending from one famous square to the Darro. Its water rose at Fuente Grande beside Alfacar, more than ten kilometres from the city, crossed agricultural ground, served orchards and mills, entered Granada through several branches, and was stored in cisterns whose sizes and locations reveal different scales of urban life. The walk proposed here starts near Plaza Larga, makes Aljibe del Rey its principal anchor, follows the documented distribution logic through Dar al-Horra and neighborhood cisterns, and stops when it reaches the river corridor at Carrera del Darro.

That sequence is intentionally downhill, but gravity alone does not explain it. The historical system included lateral branches, regulated turns, covered sections and a siphon used to bring water to the level of the old Zirid citadel. Some components survive as chambers or street mouths; others are known from documents, later fabric, place names or scholarly reconstruction. A responsible route therefore follows a chain of evidence rather than pretending that every alley overlays a visible medieval channel.

For a repeat visitor, this changes the purpose of an Albayzín morning. The hill is no longer scenery around the Alhambra. It becomes a working urban machine: capture outside the city, conveyance along a controlled gradient, storage at strategic and neighborhood scales, allocation by time, carrying into homes, irrigation of gardens, maintenance by specialist labor, and finally a descent to the lower city. The Darro is the walk’s finishing datum, not the source of Aynadamar and not proof that one continuous channel emptied there.

The map before the street: Fuente Grande to the Albayzín

The most useful first fact is geographical. Aynadamar drew from Fuente Grande, an artesian spring beside Alfacar, north of Granada. The municipal heritage account attributes the acequia’s construction to the Zirid period under Badis, who ruled from 1038 to 1077, and connects its initial purpose to supplying the Alcazaba Qadima, the old citadel on the Albayzín hill. The same account gives a route of a little more than ten kilometres before the water divided into rural and urban uses. It also records the Arabic name Ayn al-Dama, rendered there as “Fuente de las Lágrimas.” These points are set out in the Albaicín-Granada municipal heritage note on the Acequia de Aynadamar.

Before reaching the built-up hill, the water served fields and mills. At the area identified as Manflor, the network began to separate into urban branches. One secondary line passed through the Fajalauza gate and supplied cisterns including Cruz de Piedra, San Luis, Santa Isabel de los Abades and the Aljibe de la Vieja. Another followed the Camino de San Antonio toward the Hospital Real. The principal line entered by Callejón de la Alberzana and the Aljibe de Paso, continued to the Casa de los Mascarones, and sent a branch toward San Bartolomé and San Cristóbal. It then followed the Calle del Agua area, with further divisions toward cisterns on that line and toward Panaderos, where the municipal account names Polo, Salvador, Trillo, Tomasas, Peso de la Harina, Bibalbonud and San Nicolás.

This is why a “route of the cisterns” can become misleading if it is treated as a hunt for isolated monuments. The network was dendritic: a main conveyance line divided, branches crossed different hydraulic levels, and storage points served distinct urban units. The complete story cannot be seen from one street, and the surviving mouths are not evenly distributed along a single pedestrian axis. The walk must select a cross-section that makes the system intelligible.

Past Plaza Larga, the main acequia formed a siphon that raised water to the level of the Alcazaba Qadima. It supplied the Aljibe de la Gitana and Aljibe del Rey, then divided again toward the Aljibe del Gato, Cruz Verde and Dar al-Horra. From the Aljibe del Rey, a line descended toward Dar al-Horra through the structure known as the Arco de las Monjas. Beyond it, water continued toward San Miguel and San José, with later branches associated respectively with Oidores and Zenete. That documented sequence gives this article its central route logic: Plaza Larga, Aljibe del Rey, Dar al-Horra, San Miguel Bajo, the Oidores line and the Darro.

The same municipal study places Aynadamar within a larger water city. Granada also depended on acequias derived from the Darro, including the Real de la Alhambra, Axares and Romayla, and on systems linked to the Genil. Keeping those networks distinct matters. This walk is not a substitute for an Alhambra water study, nor does it claim that Aynadamar was Granada’s only supply. What the walking sequence can prove—and where it must remain cautious

A useful water route separates three kinds of statement. A verified historical claim comes from a document, archaeological study or official heritage source. A visible observation concerns what stands in public space now: a cistern mouth, a vault, a wall junction, a street level or a surviving conduit. A route judgment explains why those pieces should be visited in a particular order. The three should reinforce one another, but they are not interchangeable.

The most common error is to draw an unbroken blue line through the Albayzín and describe every stop as though water can still be watched moving between them. Much of the system is buried, altered, inaccessible or evidenced indirectly. Even a conspicuous remnant may contain several periods. The municipal note on the Arco de las Monjas, for example, connects it to the conduit descending from Aljibe del Rey toward Dar al-Horra, yet judges the surviving brick fabric later than the Islamic period and notes evidence of a route correction. Long use preserved the function while changing the material form.

A second error is to let famous views determine the route. San Nicolás and the Tomasas area belong to the water map, but a sequence that repeatedly turns toward the Alhambra can reduce cisterns to foreground decoration. The itinerary here uses the hydraulic system to choose stops. A sightline-led outing is better treated as a separate experience, such as a dedicated Albayzín viewpoint day, rather than grafted onto a specialist infrastructure walk.

The route is best understood as six linked anchors:

  • Off-map origin: Fuente Grande beside Alfacar, which establishes the external source and the distance water travelled before becoming an urban supply.
  • Urban distribution threshold: the Plaza Larga area, where the main line had already passed through a branching network and then used a siphon to reach the old citadel’s level.
  • Strategic storage: Aljibe del Rey, whose capacity and position express the scale of the Zirid political center.
  • Palace and neighborhood descent: the line toward Dar al-Horra and the Arco de las Monjas, where conduit, architecture and contested access meet.
  • Neighborhood storage: San Miguel Bajo and the Oidores association, which make the mosque-cistern-barrio relationship legible without requiring every chamber to be open.
  • Lower-city datum: Carrera del Darro, where the walk ends beside an open river corridor and the distinction between source, channel, storage and river can be restated.

At a measured pace, with exterior interpretation and one substantial pause at Aljibe del Rey, allow roughly three and a quarter to four hours. That is an editorial planning range, not a surveyed walking time and not a promise of interior access. An available interior visit, a long stop at Dar al-Horra, heat, wet paving or a slower group can extend it. The best sequence remains coherent even when all cistern interiors are closed, because its argument depends on geography, scale and distribution rather than on accumulating admissions.

Begin high, but begin with the system rather than the view

Plaza Larga is the practical orientation point because it sits near the part of the documented route where the main acequia passed into a more technically demanding urban phase. The municipal account describes a siphon beyond the plaza that brought water to the level of the Alcazaba Qadima. That detail overturns the assumption that the system was simply a downhill gutter. Hydraulic design responded to the political geography of the hill: the old citadel and its large reservoir had to be supplied at elevation.

Spend the opening minutes facing away from the most photogenic instinct. Locate, conceptually, Calle del Agua and the Panaderos branch behind the route already travelled by the water; place the Aljibe de la Gitana and Aljibe del Rey ahead; then identify the lower slopes toward San Miguel and the river. The exercise is not to reconstruct every vanished bend. It is to understand that Plaza Larga sits within a branching network whose upstream reach extends well beyond the neighborhood.

From here, Aljibe del Rey should be the first full stop. Carmen Trillo San José’s scholarly study of cisterns and mosques in medieval Granada identifies it as the largest cistern in the network, with a capacity of about 300 cubic metres, and associates it with the eleventh-century core of the Alcazaba Qadima. The same study compares it with other large reservoirs: the cistern linked to the principal mosque in the lower city at about 157 cubic metres, the Aljibe de las Tomasas at about 154, and the one associated with al-Murabitin at about 70. Capacity is not an abstract statistic here. A 300-cubic-metre reservoir in the old political center represents a different urban problem from a small neighborhood tank. It implies strategic storage, a large dependent population or complex, and a supply system important enough to justify the siphon and continuing maintenance. Aljibe del Rey is therefore the right place to explain the city-wide network before looking at smaller local units.

Do not make the route depend on entering the chamber. Access conditions can change and should be checked separately. From public space, the site still establishes three durable facts: the old citadel occupied this high ground; Aynadamar was engineered to reach it; and the reservoir’s exceptional capacity marks it as a primary node rather than one more picturesque cistern mouth. If an interior visit is available, use it to examine volume, vaulting and the physical difference between a modest street opening and the chamber hidden behind it. If it is not, preserve the time for the next sequence rather than waiting without certainty.

How to read an aljibe: typology is social as well as architectural

An aljibe is often introduced as an underground or partly buried water tank with a vaulted chamber and a street-level point of access. That description is useful but incomplete. For this route, typology should be read through five variables: capacity, date, position in the distribution network, relationship to a neighborhood institution, and the degree to which its surviving fabric represents the original phase.

The first type is the large early reservoir. Trillo’s study argues that the greatest capacities correspond to important eleventh-century buildings and urban nuclei. Aljibe del Rey is the clearest example at 300 cubic metres. The large cisterns associated with the principal mosque, al-Murabitin and Tomasas also belong to a scale that exceeds the smallest neighborhood units. Their size is evidence of concentrated demand and an early urban structure in which major political or religious centers organized surrounding space.

The second type is the more numerous, smaller neighborhood cistern of the expanded Albayzín. In the area developed and walled as an arrabal in the fourteenth century, the study sees more mosques and more cisterns, but generally reduced capacities. It gives San Nicolás at about 62 cubic metres, Polo and Trillo at about 50 each, and a range descending through smaller examples to San Luis at roughly 4.5. The pattern supports a social interpretation: as the settlement fragmented into more neighborhood units, storage became more distributed and often smaller.

The third distinction is between public neighborhood storage and water held within domestic or institutional property. A visitor will not always be able to determine that category from the street. Some cisterns present a public mouth beside a square or former mosque site; others are embedded in later buildings, courtyards or private fabric. The safe conclusion is not that hidden equals unimportant. On the contrary, an inaccessible chamber can be decisive evidence for a branch even when it cannot become a conventional stop.

The fourth distinction concerns chronology. A medieval hydraulic function may survive behind a later façade, repaired vault or redirected conduit. The Arco de las Monjas is a particularly useful warning because the official account connects it to the old route while identifying later brick construction and a corrected alignment. The visible surface is part of the system’s long history, not necessarily a frozen eleventh-century object.

The fifth distinction is spatial association. Trillo’s work emphasizes the recurring relationship among mosque, cistern and neighborhood, but it does not support a simplistic one-to-one rule. Her discussion notes that only part of the documented mosque network can be paired securely with public cisterns, and that changes of site, private wells and incomplete survival complicate the picture. The study’s plan plots 24 numbered locations or associations across the Albayzín, enough to show a broad distribution but not to turn every dot into an equally certain or equally visitable monument.

This produces a better field method than collecting names. At each stop, ask:

  • Is this a strategic reservoir, a neighborhood cistern or an uncertain/private component?
  • Does its capacity suggest a primary urban center or a smaller local unit?
  • Is the street mouth contemporary with the chamber, or could the visible fabric be later?
  • What branch of the acequia is documented here, and what part of that line is no longer visible?
  • Which institution or neighborhood node stood nearby, and how strong is the association?
  • What can be stated from evidence, and what remains an editorial reconstruction used to make the route legible?

Those questions keep the walk from becoming a catalogue. Four carefully interpreted cisterns can explain more than twelve hurried façades, especially when the route also accounts for channel engineering, governance and the labor of getting water from storage into a household.

The downhill sequence in five movements

1. Aljibe del Rey to the Dar al-Horra line

Leave Aljibe del Rey with the network still in mind. The municipal source says that water divided from this node toward the Aljibe del Gato, Cruz Verde and Dar al-Horra. The route follows the Dar al-Horra direction because it creates the clearest descent from strategic storage to a palace and then into neighborhood supply. This is a route judgment based on documented connections, not a claim that a continuous open channel can be followed underfoot.

The Arco de las Monjas gives the sequence a rare architectural hinge. The heritage account describes it as part of the conduit that descended from Aljibe del Rey toward Dar al-Horra and entered the palace from one side. Its surviving single brick arch, approximately three metres across and about two and a half metres high in the official description, carries a covered water passage above. Those measurements matter less than the relationship: the conduit is not an ornamental fountain feature but an elevated piece of supply infrastructure integrated with a palace edge.

The later nickname Arco del Ladrón de Agua is linked in the municipal account to neighbors taking water before it entered Dar al-Horra. It is a memorable illustration of contested access, but it should be handled as a later story attached to a long-lived structure, not as direct proof of how water was governed in the Zirid period. The stronger evidence is physical and documentary: this was a controlled line, the palace had a claim on supply, and the conduit required protection to preserve water quality.

Dar al-Horra can absorb far more time than the water route can afford. Its domestic and dynastic history is important, but an interior visit should be included only when it is the chosen secondary subject and access is confirmed. Otherwise, use the exterior relationship between palace, old citadel and conduit, then continue. Readers who want the palace to carry more of the day should use a route for reading domestic Granada beyond the palaces rather than compressing both subjects into one walk.

2. Dar al-Horra to San Miguel Bajo

The next movement changes scale. The source route continues from the Dar al-Horra line toward the cisterns of San Miguel and San José, each associated with further branches. San Miguel Bajo is the stronger main-route stop because the cistern, square and later church make the neighborhood unit visible in a compact setting. The point is not to claim that the present church preserves an intact mosque complex. It is to read continuity and substitution: a water node remained useful while the religious and architectural setting changed.

Here the mosque-cistern-barrio model becomes concrete. In an Islamic neighborhood, the local mosque was not only a place of worship; it could be a social and spatial center, and the nearby cistern gave the area a degree of water autonomy. After the conquest and conversion of urban religious sites, many cisterns continued because the need for storage did not disappear. The persistence of hydraulic infrastructure through political and religious change is one reason the Albayzín’s water map cannot be read from building style alone.

San Miguel Bajo is also the first meaningful bailout. A group that has already spent substantial time at Aljibe del Rey and Dar al-Horra can end the specialist sequence here and descend independently toward the lower city, or arrange a pickup at a feasible edge rather than forcing every member through the narrowest final streets. That choice sacrifices the Oidores evidence and the river-level conclusion, but it preserves the core explanation of source, strategic storage and neighborhood distribution.

Do not use the square as an unplanned long pause. The route still has its most important interpretive contrast ahead: a documented branch whose evidence is less publicly legible, followed by the open river corridor. Ten to fifteen minutes is enough to read the cistern’s position, explain the neighborhood association and make the continue-or-exit decision.

3. From San Miguel toward Oidores: where absence becomes evidence

The municipal Aynadamar account states that the San Miguel branch supplied the Aljibe de Oidores. This is the stage at which the route deliberately stops promising a sequence of open monuments. The Oidores cistern is associated with a less publicly legible setting, and the value of the stop lies in recognizing that a functioning network extended through property lines and later urban fabric. Hidden infrastructure is not a gap in the story; it is part of the story, provided the limits of visibility are stated.

Use the descent to explain why maps and documents matter. A surviving public mouth can be photographed, but a branch known through records or a chamber embedded in later construction may tell more about distribution. The route should therefore avoid language such as “the water flowed along this exact alley” unless the alignment is securely documented. A more accurate statement is that the documented San Miguel-to-Oidores relationship places this part of the lower Albayzín within the branch network, while the pedestrian line chosen today is an interpretive connection between known nodes.

This movement has the highest transition cost for a group. Streets narrow, gradients change, paving can be irregular, and visual contact between the front and back of a small party can break quickly at corners. The historical argument also becomes more abstract just as physical concentration is required. A guide or group leader should give the evidence explanation before entering the tightest descent, not while everyone is negotiating steps or traffic.

The second bailout occurs before committing to the final river descent. If knees, balance, heat or time have become the controlling factor, leave the specialist line and reach the lower city by the least demanding available option. Do not treat turning out as failure. The sequence has already demonstrated the network’s core hierarchy; the Darro finish adds a geographical conclusion, not a new proof of Aynadamar’s origin.

4. Reach Carrera del Darro at river level

The preferred finish is the western opening of Carrera del Darro near Plaza Nueva and Santa Ana, because it allows the route to arrive at the river without adding the full Cuesta del Chapiz descent. Carrera del Darro runs beside the river through the lower Albayzín, passing historic bridges and monuments before opening toward Paseo de los Tristes; the relationship is described on the municipal page for Carrera del Darro.

At this point, state the distinction explicitly. Fuente Grande supplied Aynadamar. The acequia crossed rural ground and entered the Albayzín through branches. Cisterns stored and redistributed that water. The Darro below is a separate river corridor that fed other Granada acequias and shaped the lower city. Ending beside it creates a powerful topographic cross-section, but it does not mean that the route has traced a single visible stream from Aljibe del Rey into the river.

That clarification is the intellectual payoff of the descent. A viewpoint walk uses the Darro and Alhambra as scenery. A water-infrastructure walk uses river level to compare hydraulic systems, urban elevations and forms of storage. The open river makes the hidden cisterns easier to understand because it reveals the opposite condition: moving water in a visible channel rather than a regulated supply held behind masonry.

5. Stop before the lower corridor becomes a second itinerary

Walk only far enough along Carrera del Darro to establish the river relationship and find a sensible resting or departure point. The Bañuelo, Casa de Zafra, archaeological remains, conventual buildings and bridges can each justify their own interpretation, but adding several of them here dilutes the source-to-cistern argument. The specialist route is complete once the group can explain the external spring, the urban branch network, Aljibe del Rey’s strategic scale, neighborhood storage and the distinction between Aynadamar and the Darro.

Paseo de los Tristes is an optional eastern finish, not an automatic extension. It makes sense for the alternative Panaderos-Tomasas-San Nicolás branch described later, or for travelers whose onward plan is already in the eastern lower Albayzín. It does not belong as an extra kilometre simply because the riverside is attractive. The stopping rule protects the article’s subject: reach the Darro, make the comparison, and end before another monument sequence takes over.

Water governance made the network a city

Acequia engineering explains how water moved; governance explains how a limited flow became a dependable urban resource. Trillo’s study, drawing on later records that preserve older customs, reconstructs a highly regulated system of turns among Víznar, agricultural areas and Granada. She gives an approximate summer flow of 90 litres per second and argues that the combination of rural, urban and domestic demand required rules throughout the year rather than only during the irrigation season.

The sequence of uses is particularly revealing. In the reconstruction, Víznar received a portion of the flow for fields during a defined daytime period. Agricultural areas associated with Granada used later turns. After nightfall, irrigation was prohibited and the water’s essential function became filling urban cisterns. A control tank near the city wall indicated whether the expected volume had arrived; if earlier users had taken too much, the shortfall exposed an illegal use. When cisterns were full, water could be assigned to repairs of the walls.

Other customs tied distribution to the rhythm of the week and the city. Trillo describes Friday-morning use for cisterns while worshippers were at the principal mosque, with surplus reaching houses, and identifies particular morning turns for the Alcazaba Qadima. Daylight periods could serve gardens within the city, while another turn supported wall maintenance. These details should not be presented as a timeless timetable valid across every century. They are a scholarly reconstruction from documentary evidence, valuable because they show the categories the system had to coordinate: fields, public storage, political centers, homes and collective works.

Season mattered as well. Winter turns could be longer because agricultural demand was lower and water more abundant; summer scarcity tightened competition. The city’s water system was therefore temporal as much as spatial. A map of channels without a calendar of rights misses half the infrastructure.

Maintenance distributed responsibility along the route. The study describes obligations involving residents of Granada and Víznar for cleaning the source area and repairing damage, with the scale of a repair influencing who bore the burden. The municipal heritage account also names specialist occupations of Islamic or Morisco origin—acequieros or zanaguidles, aljiberos and cañeros—and states that the system continued serving human supply and the irrigation of Albayzín cármenes into the twentieth century. These roles remind the visitor that hydraulic heritage was not self-operating. Channels silted, masonry failed, water had to be measured, and disputes had to be managed.

The neighborhood cistern converted a scheduled channel into local resilience. Water arriving at night or during a designated turn could be stored for later collection. The mosque-cistern-barrio association gave a community a supply point near its social center, but it also created responsibilities: maintaining the chamber, protecting the inlet, keeping the access workable and preventing unauthorized diversion upstream.

Domestic use began where the monumental architecture ended. Water still had to be lifted at the mouth, carried through steep streets, stored in smaller vessels and allocated within a house. It served drinking and cooking, cleaning, washing, animals where relevant, and the cultivated spaces of cármenes, though the proportion and quality assigned to each use varied. The route should resist romanticizing this labor. A silent cistern mouth does not identify who carried every vessel or how burden was divided by gender, age, status or occupation. Those questions matter, but the surviving structure alone cannot answer them.

The story attached to the Arco del Ladrón de Agua adds another layer: water rights produced opportunities for evasion. Whether a neighbor intercepted a palace supply, an upstream user exceeded a turn or a channel was damaged, control depended on observation and enforcement. Governance was not a decorative legal frame around engineering. It was the mechanism that made a long, branched and socially contested system function.

Gradient and access are part of the historical interpretation

The route’s downhill design reduces climbing but does not make it easy or universally accessible. Granada’s official accessible-itineraries map classifies the Plaza del Carmen–Paseo de los Tristes–Cuesta del Chapiz route as high difficulty over 1,400 metres, and the Cuesta del Chapiz–Dar al-Horra route as very high difficulty over 1,250 metres. Descending steep, irregular streets can load knees and ankles more heavily than a gentle ascent. Cobbles and polished paving become more demanding in rain; narrow turns complicate the use of canes, wheelchairs and larger mobility devices; and a route that appears short on a phone map can contain steps or abrupt grade changes. Anyone who needs step-free continuity should not assume that “start high and walk down” solves the problem.

There are three sensible formats:

  • Continuous specialist walk: Plaza Larga to Aljibe del Rey, Dar al-Horra, San Miguel Bajo, the Oidores line and Carrera del Darro. Choose this for travelers comfortable with sustained descent, uneven paving and several standing explanations.
  • Two-part interpretation: visit the upper anchors around Aljibe del Rey and Dar al-Horra, then reposition to the lower Darro corridor for the final comparison. This breaks the physical continuity but preserves the intellectual sequence for a mixed-mobility group.
  • Upper-only study: Plaza Larga, Aljibe del Rey and the Dar al-Horra conduit relationship, ending before the steepest descent. This is the correct shorter branch when the cistern system matters more than completing a symbolic line to the river.

Transport is relevant only at the transition points. An upper-hill arrival can prevent the route from beginning with an exhausting climb, and a lower-city pickup can stop the day from ending with an unnecessary return uphill. Exact microbus routes, traffic access and stops should be checked close to use rather than treated as permanent heritage facts. The valuable service is coordination between the chosen evidence sequence and the group’s actual walking capacity, not a vehicle added for its own sake.

For a small private group, the leader should also decide where explanations occur. Give the city-wide map at Plaza Larga or Aljibe del Rey, where the group can stand together. Explain the evidence gap around Oidores before entering narrow alleys. Restate the Aynadamar-Darro distinction only after everyone has safely reached river level. Good interpretation is partly choreography: the right fact delivered where people can see, hear and move without strain.

Optional branches: choose a different evidence set, not a longer list

The eastern cistern branch through Panaderos, Tomasas and San Nicolás

The municipal source traces a branch through the Panaderos area to a dense sequence including Polo, Salvador, Trillo, Tomasas, Peso de la Harina, Bibalbonud and San Nicolás. This branch is useful when the primary question is how neighborhood cisterns vary in scale and distribution. Trillo’s capacity comparisons support that purpose: Tomasas belongs to the larger group, while San Nicolás, Polo and Trillo illustrate smaller units associated with the expanded Albayzín.

Use this as a replacement for the San Miguel-Oidores descent, not an addition. Begin with the same source briefing and Aljibe del Rey anchor, then turn toward the eastern cluster. The cost is greater exposure to busy viewpoint territory and a more demanding finish toward Cuesta del Chapiz and Paseo de los Tristes. The benefit is a denser comparison of capacities and neighborhood nodes. The route must keep cistern evidence in the foreground; a long mirador stop changes the subject.

The source branch to Alfacar and Fuente Grande
